If your system experienced a disk drive failure at the end of a business day resulting in loss of data, could you re-create all of that day's transactions? How long would it take? And, at what expense? One of the benefits of SDR is the ability to back up your data multiple times daily, without affecting production! Backing up your data multiple times daily can also protect you against data loss due to accidental file deletions, etc.
When SDR is configured to utilize a properly prepared user ASP, loss of data due to a disk drive failure can practically be eliminated!
SDR can also be used to help keep your system available 24x7 by eliminating your backup window.
Simple Data Replicator (SDR) provides IBM
i, iSeries, and AS/400 administrators with the tools
needed to allow backups of production data at anytime, even
multiple times a day, without interrupting production use of
the system! SDR works with your existing backup software
and devices, and is a better, more efficient means of backing
up your AS/400 data than using save-while-active. Use SDR
to protect yourself from data loss by backing up your data
multiple times daily. SDR can protect you against
accidental data loss, as well as data loss as a result of drive
failure.
Or, you can use SDR to eliminate system down time for
backups.
IBM finally acknowledges what our customers have known for
years. In the V5R4 infocenter, IBM includes a new section
titled "Backup from a second copy". Following is an excerpt
from that section: "Some technologies, such as replication,
make available a second copy of the data that can be used to
shift the save window from the primary copy to the secondary
copy. This technique can eliminate the backup window on the
primary system. Therefore, it does not affect production since
the backup processing is done on a second system."
Of course, our customers know that they don't have to have a
second system in order to use this technique. All they need is
our SDR product to allow them to maintain and back up a second
copy of their data on a single system.

SDR replicates all of the changes made to the database files and data areas of your choice. The changes are applied to a duplicate set of the data objects stored in another location on your system.
SDR provides a simple, easy to use interface for you to manage the replication of data objects on your system. SDR is designed to look and feel much like PDM, which is a familiar interface for many users.
SDR is designed to perform all of the tasks associated with preparing data objects for replication. You do not need to know how to create or manage journals and receivers, SDR does all of this for you.
SDR can co-exist with most other data replication and high availability products. Use SDR to protect yourself against accidental data loss by backing up your critical data multiple times daily.
SDR operates on any AS/400, iSeries, or IBM i running V5R1 or higher.
SDR is a proven data replication product with its first installation occurring in May, 2004.
Simple Data Replicator
is SIMPLE TO INSTALL, and SIMPLE TO OPERATE &
MAINTAIN.
SDR is simply the best way to perform backups without
interrupting the production use of your
AS/400!
How does SDR work? SDR reads entries from journal receivers and "applies" the information in each journal entry to a replicated copy of the appropriate database file or data area. When you want to back up your data, you temporarily stop SDR, back up the replicated copies of your data, and then restart SDR. It's that simple!

If you wish to replicate data from one system to another, or from one logical partition to another, you need to check out our Simple Object Replicator product.
We recommend using LaserVault Backup with SDR to perform multiple backups daily.
